Kowloon Peninsula
Kowloon Peninsula is a great day or weekend trip away from Hong Kong Island. While still a certified Tourist Mecca, this place is packed with fun shops, restaurants, museums and walking areas. The span of water between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island can be crossed by bridge, railway, boat or plane, which all vary in price as well as time.
Tsim Sha Tsui is the bustling, crowded tourist hub of Kowloon. This place mostly offers tons of overpriced restaurants and shops, but the night market on Temple St. is worth a visit, and be sure to take a stroll down the Promenade.
Head over to Mong Kok in the Northern section of Kowloon to see the many fascinating open air markets. The Bird market has hundreds of song birds in bamboo cages. The Goldfish market has pools full of exotic fish to look at, and the Flower Market is filled with flowers of every type, as well as bonsais.
Kowloon has its share of parks that make for a perfect stroll or picnic. The Kowloon Walled City used to hold a 19th century military outpost, which has since been reduced to ruins that can now be explored freely. Also here are the remains of the gates to the city. Kowloon park is another relaxing walking/lounging area, but for a bit more exercise try Lion Rock Country Park or Kam Shan Country Park. These parks have many marked trails, and the trails in Kam Shan are inhabited by macaque monkeys.
There are many excellent museums located in Kowloon as well. The Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum is built on the old Han Tomb, and the Hong Kong Museum of History details the fascinating history and lifestyle of the Hong Kong people. The Space Museum is also a great visit.
