Hong Kong's New Territories
Hong Kong's New Territories hold over 740 square kilometers of beautiful, lush land just waiting to be explored. Most of the food and water that feeds the bigger cities in Hong Kong comes from this area, and it provides a tranquil break from the rush of Hong Kong Island's urban lifestyle.

While there are many new towns and estates that litter this area, there is still an air of traditional China here in the territory's ancient temples, walled villages and countryside.

Man Fu Ji, or The Temple of 10 000 Buddhas, is one of the most fascinating of the New Territory's temples, and is reached only after climbing over 4000 steps. The main temple of this complex houses the golden body of Yuet Kai Fai Sai, the founder of the temple, which is enclosed in a glass case. The monk died in 1965 at the age of 87, and his body was in such good shape that it was lacquered and gilded. Chuk Lam Sim Yuen is another gorgeous Buddhist monastery, and his home to three giant Buddhist statues.

The Kam Tin Walled Village was built over 700 years ago, and the ancient crumbling walls still remain to this day. This is one of the only villages where you will see the female inhabitants still adhering to traditional Chinese dress, which they wear during all of their days activities.

The Wishing Tree, and ancient banyan tree, is covered colored papers. Legend has it that wishes will be granted to those who's papers are captures by the trees branches when thrown to the wind.

To see some natural scenery and wildlife, try visiting Sai Kung Natural Park and the Mai Po Marshes.
